Helping Students with Chronic Illness

Students may need to take breaks from school to recover from accidents, surgeries, or to receive medical treatments. The Beekman School is here to help students who have acute conditions that affect attendance as well as those who must manage a chronic illness while continuing their education. We work with parents and students to successfully balance chronic illness and school requirements. Depending on the circumstances, we offer a combination of in-school and online classes for high school students. We also provide specialized education programs, including small-group, catch-up, or personalized tutoring. Beekman's flexible scheduling options work well for students with a chronic illness who may not be able to attend a full day of classes or who need to make adjustments for medical appointments. It’s important to know that students managing or recovering from the following conditions have successfully attended Beekman:

  • Concussion
  • Mononucleosis
  • Migraines
  • Chronic fatigue
  • Cancer
  • Lyme’s disease
  • Eating disorders
  • School refusal
  • Anxiety/Depression
  • Selective mutism

Our goal is to offer a supportive environment for students who may regularly or periodically need a modified approach to learning.

504 Plans for Private School Students

A 504 plan in a private high school allows school staff and families to address the challenges presented by a chronic condition or disability. The plans include a strategy for adapting educational programs in light of health concerns. When learners experience extended illnesses, they may qualify for 504 accommodations for high school students, such as modified testing or schedules. These accommodations can help remove or reduce obstacles so that progress can be made in those students' classes. That’s why we are prepared to support a 504 or an individual health plan (IHP) for the benefit of the student. We want to serve as an educational resource for those who need opportunities for flexibility as they strive for academic success.
