Learn Politics Through Music at The Beekman School
This is a semester-long course that explores the relationship between social movements and music. We will interpret social movements as central moments in the reconstitution of culture. We will discover how social movements challenge dominant categories of artistic merit and utilize the media of artistic expression for communicating with the larger society. We will compare music to ideology and understand that where ideology commands interpretation, music works to suggest it. We will watch music evolve over decades, and see that the creation process is always based on past traditions but within new political contexts.
