One of the comments I hear most often from prospective families in my 20+ years here at The Beekman School is, “…but I’ve never heard of you!” I’ve heard this from lifelong New Yorkers who thought they knew all of the local schools, and I’ve heard this from educational consultants who have been placing students in larger Metro-area schools for years. Are we a new school? No; we’ve been around for almost 100 years. Are we (gasp) not very good? While I typically jump to the defense of my beloved school, I will take this opportunity to let others speak on my behalf.
Niche.com publishes school rankings each year to help parents (and students) who are looking for guidance during their school search. There is, of course, no one way to evaluate all schools, but Beekman is consistently in the top 10-25% (based on the ranking metric) of its peer schools.
One of those rankings is for “most diverse private high schools in New York” (where we are in the top 10%). With typically a quarter of our student population hailing from countries across the globe, we are fortunate to share with and learn from students from a variety of cultural and racial backgrounds. Our location in midtown Manhattan, with easy access to multiple bus and subway lines as well as Grand Central Station, means that we have welcomed students from all five boroughs, as well as Long Island, Westchester, New Jersey, and Connecticut who are looking for a school featuring incredible flexibility and built-in learning support with college preparatory academic standards. Our straightforward financial aid process also allows for students from a range of economic backgrounds to join our school and enjoy the small class sizes and personalized attention that we have specialized in since 1925.
We are also in the top 25% of “best college prep private high schools in New York”. With our strong curriculum of core courses (including AP U.S. History, AP English Literature & Composition, and AP Calculus) and numerous electives offered each semester (from The Real Game of Thrones and Art Portfolio to Philosophy and Audio Mixing), we are committed to preparing our students for the challenges of college in an environment that is friendly and engaging.

Our reviews also speak for themselves—whether you are reading those on Niche.com, GreatSchools.org, PrivateSchoolReview.com, or our own website, you will find that parents and students appreciate our compassionate attention to the individual while maintaining high expectations. With an average of 7 students in a classroom (capped at 10) and a school building that is a renovated townhouse, we see each student and recognize their potential.
I may be biased, but I think that we’re the best little school you’ve never heard of.
